Learn these key words and phrases. They appear throughout the lesson and the dialogue below.

Focus on the action or the receiver of the action.

Structure: Subject + be + past participle (+ by agent).

When to use it: When the doer is unknown, unimportant or obvious.

Notice the target language in these examples:

• The letter was sent yesterday.
• English is spoken worldwide.

Read this short dialogue. Then cover it and try to remember one line for each speaker.

Avoid these frequent errors:

• Forgetting the correct form of be.
• Keeping the object order from the active sentence.

Say your answers out loud, then write them down:
